Description
Odesa Black (known in Europe as Alibernet) is a unique local grape variety developed in Ukraine in 1957. It is a cross between Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wines from Odesa Black have become a hallmark of Ukrainian winemaking. The variety was created at the Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking and reflects the authentic character of the region like no other.
Odesa Black is resilient and highly promising for winemaking. Its deep ruby color and expressive flavor profile make it easily recognizable among red wines.
Traditionally used in sweet and dessert wines—and previously in blends to enhance color, tannins, and aroma—it is now increasingly produced as a high-quality single-varietal wine.
Thanks to its high yield and frost resistance, the grape allows for a wide range of styles, from dry to dessert wines, depending on the harvest time, typically from late September to early October.
Dry wines show vibrant ruby color with subtle vegetal notes, while dessert styles reveal deeper color and hints of chocolate. The variety is also used for juices, sparkling wines, and even ice wine in Ukraine.
The vineyards are located in Danube Bessarabia, on the slopes of Lake Yalpug. Harvesting and vine pruning are carried out by hand.
A unique microclimate is created by the proximity of the freshwater lake, helping to regulate temperature.
Soils rich in limestone, chalk, and shell rock contribute to the wine’s acidity, while significant day–night temperature differences ensure optimal ripening of the grapes.
“Odesa Black Kolonist” is produced using classical dry wine methods and aged for 6 months in French barriques made from century-old oak.
The wine reveals a complex profile with notes of mulberry, prunes, and subtle smoky nuances, supported by well-structured tannins.
It has an aging potential of 3 years or more, developing deeper aromas and flavors over time.
Pairs perfectly with rich meat dishes, smoked foods, and warm salads. It complements fatty meats such as pork and lamb, and can also be enjoyed with desserts like chocolate fondant or crème brûlée.
Serve at +16…+18°C in Bordeaux-style glasses (450–700 ml).
