Why Red Wine Is Chosen for Easter: History, Symbols, and Legends

Easter is not only about paska and colored eggs. In many traditions, a glass of wine stands beside them. And most often—it is red. Why is that? The answer lies in the combination of religion, history, and even human legends.

A Symbol That Begins with the Last Supper

The tradition of drinking wine at Easter originates from the Last Supper—the final meal of Jesus Christ with His disciples. It was then that wine became a symbol of His blood.

In Christianity, this moment is preserved in the sacrament of Communion—the Eucharist—where wine carries deep spiritual meaning: life, sacrifice, and rebirth.

Here are the words of Jesus from the Last Supper (Gospel of Matthew 26:27–29):

“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying,
Drink ye all of it;
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day
when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

As we can see, Jesus directly calls wine—the fruit of the vine—His blood. This is where the symbolism of red wine during Easter celebrations originates.

And that is why red wine is a natural choice. Its color is directly associated with blood, and therefore with Christ’s sacrifice and the victory of life over death.

Red as the Color of Life and Renewal

Interestingly, the symbolism of the color red existed long before Christianity. In ancient cultures, it represented:
— life and energy
— fertility of the earth
— the power of renewal

Easter, as a celebration of spring and new life, naturally inherited this symbolism. That is why eggs are dyed red, and wine is also chosen in this color.

The Legend of Mary Magdalene and the Red Egg

One of the most well-known legends tells that Mary Magdalene came to the Roman Emperor Tiberius with the news of Christ’s resurrection. He did not believe her and said:

“This is as impossible as this egg turning red.”

At that moment, the egg in her hand turned red.

This story закрепила red as the color of Easter. And naturally, wine—as another “living” symbol—also became part of this tradition.

Wine as a Sign of Joy After Fasting

There is also a more “earthly” explanation. After the long Great Lent, when people refrained from many foods, the festive table became a symbol of returning to the fullness of life.

Here, wine is not just a drink, but a sign of:
— joy
— abundance
— the end of restraint

It is the moment when restraint is replaced by gratitude.

Why Wine and Not Something Else?

Wine has held a special place in culture since antiquity. It was not seen simply as alcohol, but as part of life and culture. It accompanied important moments: birth, celebrations, sacrifices, and unions.

In Christianity, this meaning only deepened. Wine became not just an element — but a language of symbols.

Modern Meaning

Today, a glass of red wine at Easter is an integral part of the celebration.

Wine has become a tradition that has lasted for thousands of years. It is a product that adds depth to the holiday.

Today, it is customary to bring gifts to the festive table, to visit others with Easter baskets—and of course, a bottle of wine becomes an essential part of the gift.

The best gift choice for Easter is Magnum Opus by Kolonist —a red wine aged in French oak, made from the Ukrainian grape variety Odesa Black.

Pay attention to the label. It perfectly emphasizes the symbolism of the holiday and embodies the deep meaning of red wine on Easter Day.
